It is also said to be the highest mountain in the Uttarakhand which has two summits, the main summit with an altitude of 7,816 meters and Nanda Devi East at 7,434 meters. Surrounded by several peaks over 21,000 ft is a difficult one to access and the circle of peaks formed is known as Nanda Devi Sanctuary.

Being visible from Mukteshwar, Nanda Devi is the second highest peak in the entire country.
