Also, known as the Sahyadri (Benevolent Mountains), the Western Ghats were formed even before the Himalayas. Running parallel to the west coast of India, it is called the Great Escarpment of India too. Want to get in touch with the flora and fauna of India? The Western Ghats is your go-to place.

Extension
Starting from the Satpura Range it extends till Kanyakumari. It covers the border of Gujrat and the states of Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
The Western Ghats are responsible for rainfall too!
The western slopes receive intense rainfall and some places are also termed as “Cherrapunji of southwest India”. Apart from the rain, the weather is quite pleasant and enjoyable throughout the range.
Peaks
With a couple of peaks above 2000 meters, the highest peak is Anamudi which stands at an elevation of 2695 m. The peak is situated in Kerala. Other than this Doddabetta (2637 m) of Tamil Nadu, is the highest peak of that state.
It ranks 8th in the top 10 hottest biological diversity hotspots in the world.
Flora and fauna
Neelakurinji is a special type of flower that blossoms just once in every 12 years. This purplish blue coloured flower is found in the Shola forests of the Western Ghats. Other than this is almost 5000 species of flowering plants present here.
The evergreen forests of the Deccan Plateau have exotic rare species like Purple frogs, lion-tailed macaque, and many others.
